Jazz Evening, July 2008

We have a vibrant music programme at Manor Gardens which runs both within class music and in our extra-mural programme.

Class Music - Our children look at many genres of music, learn a wide variety of songs, study basic music theory, play xylophones, drums and other percussion instruments, compose music based on various themes, listen to music and respond with art, movement or by answering questions. On the completion of a theme, classes sometimes perform in an assembly or in our quarterly music evenings. From Grade 4-7, music books are kept to record the various concepts, composers and genres studied.

Extra-Mural Music - This exciting programme takes place either for 30 minutes before school, or during breaks. We run 4 recorder groups - one for grade 2s, another for grade 3s, an intermediate group, and then an advanced group. We offer 2 guitar groups - beginner and advanced. The percussion band collaborates with the teacher to compose pulsating pieces we love to perform and the audience loves to hear! In 2008, our ensemble has a trumpeter, clarinetist, cellist, 6 violinists, 6 guitarists, 2 xylophone players, 3 percussionists and a number of recorder players. We perform an eclectic array of music from African, Irish and Israeli, to Tango and Jazz. Our two choirs - Junior (Grade 2-3) and Senior (Grade 4-7) - work hard to present beautiful music which brings great delight to their audiences.

Private Lessons - Private violin and piano lessons are offered at Manor Gardens. We are aiming to have other instruments taught here too.

Assemblies - The intermediate and advanced recorder group, plus the advanced guitar group take turns to perform music while the school leads into the hall for assembly. These groups also accompany the hymns. Sometimes percussionists add an extra sparkle! The school often sings in rounds and a descant or alto part is added by certain classes to some of the community songs.

Lunch Hour Concerts - Due to the marvellous proximity of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, we often take classes to hear free lunch hour concerts at Howard College. These prove to be highly enriching experiences.
