The grade 2 children are currently learning about fire. They were given a writing activity in which they had to pretend they were cavemen. They needed to make a fire to cook some dinner for their family, and to keep their family warm. Of course they could not take advantage of the luxuries today - charcoal, firelighters and matches. Here are what some of the children wrote:

Well first I had to go and get some sticks and logs. Sticks for the fire and logs for my family to sit on. So I went to a place where a big dead tree was. I climber the tree. Phew! It was hard work! But then... I found out I needed something to chop it with! So I came up with the idea of a... flint axe! So the first thing I needed was wood! So I went out looking for wood. After a while I found a strong looking bit of wood. The next thing I needed was stone. So I found a sharp looking bit of stone. Then I got some vines to tie the stone to the wood. When that was done I went back to the tree where I was before. Then I cut the branches off. Then I went home where my family waited for a good old fire.

Once upon a time there was a family. Not just any family, they were cave men. They were called the Grant family. They worked hard to find wood. They had to work as a team to find wood. But more importantly they had to know how to make a fire. They rubbed sticks together to make a fire. "Fire is important. It makes us warm," said mom Grant. "It makes our food cook," said dad Grant. "If we're lost we can make a sign to the other tribe," said little Grant. "Well, it's time to go to bed, little Grant." Then end.

Me and my family are cold. We need fire. I go to the cave to get the axe to cut the wood. I find lots of wood and sticks. I go home. It starts to rain and rain and rain. We waited and waited for the rain to stop. Then the rain stopped. We looked for a dry spot. We found a nice spot under a tree. We waited for the water to dry up. Then my brother and dad went to catch some animals to eat. Me, my mom and sister went to get the sticks and wood. Then we went to play. Then our mom told us to get one log to sit on. When my brother and dad got back they told us that they caught so many animals that they could not take the whole lot of animals. They went to get the other animals. We had a big feast. We made a big fire. The food was yum. We loved the meal. The end.

Once upon a time the first men and women lived. Their names were Ooba, Tood, Cien and Fite. They all lived together. They never hit each other and never kicked each other. One day they rubbed sticks together for fun then it glowed. They thought they made the gods angry. So they said "Please don't hurt us". The glowing thing stopped. "Phew," they said. Ooba said "I'm sick and tired". "Why?" they said scaredly. "Because," said Ooba. Fite said "Me too." Then they did it again and figured out what to call the glowing thing........ "FIRE" they all shouted. Fite said "Yes, that's a good name." "Not good, brilliant" they said to Fite. "Why?" said Fite in a tiny voice sounding like a mouse. "Because it's brilliant," said the cave people in a horid voice. Then they ate. "Mmmm. This is good," said Ooba with his mouth full. "Burp". "Burp". "Burp", "Buuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrppppppp," they said. Then "snore, snore, snore, snore, snore, snore, snore, snore." When they woke up they were stuffed. "Er," said one. "Ee," said another. "Snore," said the third. but the other was gone. They screamed. "Eek, eek, eek," they screamed. Then he came back. "What's all the fuss?" said Ooba. They jumped around. "You're alive," they whispered. "Yes I'm alive," said Ooba. They had presents for him. "Happy birthday," they said. "Thanks," he said.
